One night quite a few weeks ago, I came up with an idea for a pinup inspired vigilante MRA chick named Snowi Whitey.
Her first inked in design is here:
My original plan was to maybe turn her into a book series, a vigilante badass taking out politically correct baddies. I was slightly inspired by Tank Girl, Gorillaz, that kind of style.
As I drew her more and more, she soon became, well, this.
Warning, big boobs below!
Anyhow, yeah. She was quickly becoming a sort of sex symbol, which didn't really make me happy, and there was a sort of pervert feel to drawing her this way.
Sadly, I was indeed trying to sellout. I figured, the more sexual I make her, the more people will want to see me draw more of her.
As a starving artist desperate to make even a cent off of my work, I started making more of Sexy Snowi.
And then, I gave Snowi a BF.
Thinking this would make her less appealing, I held off on drawing him. His name was Dave, and she rescued him from prison after he was sentenced to death for having a penis.
I was nervous about drawing him into the situation, but, then I started to really like them as a couple.
I apologize tiny arms over here. I'm a starving artist, not a good one.
Anyhow, I started backing away from Snowi being overtly sexual. And I started to like her more.
I even drew a fanart of Snowi and Toon for TuenHueb, and he featured her in a video!
Wish I would have spent more time on that one. I can't get over the painful boobs.
Anyhow, I plan on continuing Snowi's adventures eventually. I may post more of her here, but if not, you can see the rest of her on my DeviantArt http://nikoladark.deviantart.com/gallery/
Also, Snowi wants everyone to know something...
Sadly, I haven't made money with her yet. I plan on making a few designs for the FN shop, though idk if that will be something thats decided to be opened to the public yet, for instance, users can submit their art and Marie will put it on the stuff in the shop. we've discussed it behind the scenes though so that will be one way to make money from Snowi.
Thank you very much though. Sadly, yeah, I know sex doesn;t really sell anymore, but I do know every artist and writer needs to sell out a little if they want to get noticed earlier, for instance I used to do fanart and would get a lot of fans of my work, but the minute I switched to OCs and my own stuff, the support dwindled significantly.
Not to mention that Snowi being for mens rights has been a struggle too. I remember gaining watchers when she was just the sexy girl, but the minute I began posting stuff that made it obvious what she was about, my follow base turned to none. the support that I do get for her has been awesome, and it encourages me to keep going. I've had lots of interesting convos on my deviantart page because of drawing her, convos about social issues, mens rights, and feminism.
You know. . . I have to say. . . as much as I would never tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do (as I am not them, therefore I don't claim to know what's best for them), I do find AJ's honesty refreshing. xD I may not wholeheartedly agree with what he's said, but I do appreciate that he says what's on his mind with ease. And you can tell, even if he appears hostile, he's clearly being sincere and trying to be helpful.
And strangely, I both agree and disagree with what he's said. I do think you should make things you personally like, because authentic passion comes through in one's work, and that tends to make it better than it otherwise would be, which makes it easier to sell. On the other hand, this definitely isn't always the case. I've stated in one of my posts that my favorite people in the world are the Wachowski sisters, and they are incredibly passionate about their work, and as much as *I* love their work, most people hate most of their work. The definition of their "success" outside the Matrix films is. . .debatable. Same thing could be said about M. Night Shyamalan (I love most of his stuff too xD).
At the end of the day, you have to decide what you need, and what's more important to you. As a musician, I read an article recently, can't remember from where, and I think it was the lead singer of Imagine Dragons being interviewed. He said something to the effect of, "This life, the touring, the constant travel, the cramped spaces, the tight schedules, the little sleep -- it's not for most people. Those hard years that a band gets out there and tries to sell itself are the years that make or break every band. You can't do this unless you literally can't do anything else. It has to be what your entire life is about, and if it isn't, you're probably not going to make it." I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment. And how it applies here is that if you want to do something that is difficult to earn a living off of, it has to be your entire life. It has to be something you like doing, or at least something you're so good at that you can make something of yourself with it.
I'm in no position to give advice, and I'm not trying to, this is really just me blurbing, so take it with a grain of salt. xD I only mean to say there is part of what AJ has said that rings true. The Wachowskis don't need anyone's approval, they'll keep making movies and shows the way they want to no matter what. If it's what you want more than anything, money either finds you, or you happily learn to live without it (that's what I've done so far xD). You've already said you've made money with it, so I'd say that's a great sign.
sex doesnt sell any more(porns free). make her a more relate able then what sells. i tried making mda last year just to sell out. it never took off.( its a fuck drug). point is make it to where you like it first, not where you think others would. although nothing wrong with sex. make it just a thing that happens. oh fuck whitey . its like the new cracker
This is pretty cute. xD
